Cascading Reports

Cascading Reports Overview

Cascade replicates versions of a current ad hoc report along one dimension for user defined members. For example, if you have a report for your division, you may wish to create separate reports for each department.

Each report version is populated on a separate tab of an Excel workbook of your choice:

  • Current workbook
  • New workbook
  • Existing workbook

Tabs are labeled with the dimension member defined in the cascade. Note that Excel limits tab names to 31 characters. Once the cascading operation is complete, you can rename the tabs if desired.

Procedure: Create Cascading Reports

1. Select a member in the POV that you would like to cascade. You can only cascade a dimension in the POV; you cannot cascade a member in the grid.

2. Select the  on the Cascade button

3. Select a workbook for your cascading report:

  • Same Workbook
  • New Workbook
  • Different Workbooks

4. Review the Select Cascade Members dialog box to be sure the number of cascaded sheets is 1 before you begin selecting the dimension and members to cascade. If a dimension shows the dimension name and a member, delete the dimension name so that your dialog box looks like the example on the right.

5. Select the Member Selection button for the dimension you want to cascade and select the members. In our example, we will open the Member Selection dialog box for Entity and select the children of 1_CO1NR – College of Natural Resources.

6. Arrange the members as desired and then select OK.

7. Review the Select Cascade Members dialog box to be sure that the number of cascades sheets is what you expect and then select OK

8. Essbase will create one ad hoc query in a separate tab for each of the members you selected.

Report Size and Performance

The report will be generated with one tab for each member selected. Report generation time varies depending on the number of members selected. For reasonable performance, limit the number of cells created in a Cascade operation to 10,000.

50 rows * 20 columns * 10 sheets = 10,000 cells created

Refreshing Cascaded Reports
